Weston Primary School Praised by Ofsted for Inclusive Spirit and Joyful Learning Environment

St Martin’s Church of England Primary School in Worle, Weston-super-Mare, has received glowing praise from Ofsted inspectors, who commended the school for its welcoming atmosphere and the pride pupils feel in their community.

The Ofsted report highlights that pupils at St Martin’s “feel safe, valued and included,” with staff providing a warm welcome and meeting each child’s individual needs from day one. The curriculum is described as purposeful and engaging, with children enjoying lessons and speaking highly of their kind and supportive teachers. Pupils understand the value of hard work and aspire to succeed.

Behaviour both in class and during playtime was noted as exemplary. The report states, “Pupils behave impeccably, demonstrating strong self-discipline and dedication. Lessons are seldom disrupted by inappropriate behaviour.” Bullying is rare and quickly, effectively addressed if it occurs, with pupils generally resolving minor conflicts themselves.

Playtimes were described as “joyous experiences,” where pupils engage in various outdoor activities, playing cooperatively by taking turns and sharing equipment. They support one another in creativity, problem solving, and navigating physical challenges.

Attendance rates have steadily improved since 2020, reflecting leaders’ commitment to regular pupil attendance and their impactful efforts. Inclusion is another key strength; staff ensure that every child—including those with special educational needs, children in care, and those who speak English as an additional language—is safe, well, and ready to learn.

The report also praises the school leadership, noting staff feel valued and supported with concerns like workload taken into account. School leaders actively engage with parents, carers, and the wider community, and collaborate across the trust to broaden pupils’ opportunities.

Pupils themselves express strong positivity about their experiences at St Martin’s. They describe a supportive environment where they feel safe, cared for, and respected, with their voices heard and valued. Opportunities to contribute to school life and take on responsibilities are highly appreciated.

Ofsted, which now assesses schools across seven categories instead of giving a single overall judgement, gave St Martin’s a strong standard in six categories: attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. The school met the expected standard in achievement.

Headteacher Tracey Thomas remarked, “We are delighted with the inspection outcome, demonstrating strong performance in six out of seven areas under a more rigorous framework. This recognition reflects the quality education and care we offer.”

She further praised the inclusive ethos, joyous playtimes, and the positive experiences of pupils who feel safe and valued. “It’s especially rewarding to see that our efforts are making a noticeable difference for all pupils, and that we provide an inclusive and ambitious start in Early Years,” Thomas added.

The school currently has places available for September, inviting interested families to contact the school office for more information or to arrange a visit.
