Weston MP Fully Supports Ambitious Tropicana 10,000-Person Arena Project

Weston-super-Mare’s Labour MP, Dan Aldridge, has expressed unwavering support for plans to transform the Tropicana into a premier 10,000-person outdoor arena. The initiative, led by North Somerset Council, proposes leasing the former lido to renowned entertainment company Live Nation for a 25-year period, aiming to create one of the largest music venues in the South West.

Describing the project as a “phenomenal opportunity,” Mr. Aldridge emphasized the significant economic boost it could bring to the seaside town. “Weston needs to believe in itself and its future. This development is a strong signal that we do,” he said during an interview with the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Live Nation’s involvement is expected to attract further investment to Weston-super-Mare, complementing ongoing regeneration efforts including the revamped marine lake and Birnbeck Pier renovations. These projects have collectively benefited from over £39 million in UK government funding secured through the Levelling Up Fund, with Aldridge playing a key role in advocating for this support.

Aldridge’s enthusiasm for Weston’s revival is evident, as he referenced the Tropicana’s iconic history—from its days as a 1930s lido, its near-demolition, to its rebirth as the setting for Banksy’s famed 2015 Dismaland art installation. Despite its appeal as an events space, the Tropicana has struggled financially, underscoring the urgency behind the council’s plan.

While councillors have approved moving toward a lease agreement with Live Nation, some concerns remain. The council has paused plans to borrow £6 million for the project as they explore alternative funding options, and future “gateway decisions” could determine the project’s fate.

Eddie Kemsley of Live Nation acknowledged the scale of the undertaking: “This is a massive project for us as well. We have extensive experience with ventures like this, and we are confident in navigating the necessary steps with the council to ensure success.”

With strong political backing, significant investment, and a vision to reinvigorate Weston-super-Mare’s cultural and economic landscape, the Tropicana arena project represents a bold stride forward for the town.
