Weston Marine Lake Closed Until 2026 for Major Enhancements

Weston Marine Lake has officially closed as of October 2nd to undergo extensive improvement works aimed at revitalizing this cherished tidal lake. North Somerset Council initiated the project on October 1st, with the completion anticipated by April 2026.

The upgrade plan features a variety of enhancements, including new onsite signage, a fresh concession, and dedicated equipment hire and storage facilities. Public amenities are being upgraded too, with additional toilets, including an accessible unit, and the conversion of some restrooms into self-contained cubicles with direct promenade access.

Weston-based EJ McGrath Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the project. Their scope includes installing cycle racks, repairing, resurfacing, and rebuilding steps and ramps, upgrading handrails, refurbishing the lower walkway around the lake, and restoring the Madeira Gardens pavilion roof.

Councillor Mike Solomon, executive member responsible for seafronts at North Somerset Council, emphasized the community-driven approach: “It’s exciting to see progress on our plans to enhance Marine Lake as a vibrant, family-friendly space offering year-round food, drink, and leisure activities. Over 120 local residents contributed valuable feedback during last summer’s Grove Park Gathering, which has shaped these works. We also appreciate the dedicated efforts of the Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks volunteer group in supporting the lake’s ongoing management.”

Efforts are underway to explore innovative funding for the lake’s maintenance and dredging, with support for grant applications underway. The council extends apologies for any inconvenience caused during the works and assures the public that the improvements will significantly enrich this iconic seafront destination.

Liam McGrath, representing EJ McGrath Construction, stated: “Being chosen as the main contractor is an honor. We’re proud of our previous work on Weston’s promenade and look forward to enhancing Marine Lake, continuing to positively impact our hometown.”

Detailed plans and drawings are available on North Somerset Council’s website under planning application reference 25/P/0855/R3, approved last month. The designs resulted from collaboration between the community, local groups, and consultants We Made That and Super Culture.

This project forms part of North Somerset Council’s broader placemaking vision for Weston, supported by a £20 million UK government grant aimed at transforming the town’s public spaces.
