Weston Beach Race Called Off Amid Storm Amy ‘Risk to Life’ Warning

The highly anticipated Weston Beach Race motorbike event at Weston-super-Mare has been cancelled due to hazardous conditions caused by Storm Amy. Organisers issued a stern “risk to life” warning, urging all participants and spectators to stay away from the beach.

What was expected to be a thrilling race weekend attracting hundreds of competitors and thousands of fans in North Somerset has been disrupted by fierce storm-force winds. Visitors have been advised to remain inside hotels, tents, or campervans as the exposed coastline faces severe weather.

Race director Gareth Hockey described the destruction overnight as powerful gusts toppled portable toilets, “easy-up” gazebos, marquees, and even some motorbikes. Speaking from a wind-lashed event headquarters marquee early Saturday, Hockey appealed for volunteers to assist in rebuilding the track early Sunday, hoping to salvage the event.

“This is not a decision we take lightly,” Hockey said in a video message just after 7 a.m., “but the priority is everyone’s safety. The entire site is closed due to the risk to life. Please stay where you are, do not come to the beach, and avoid taking unnecessary risks.”

While several bikes suffered minor topple incidents, all have been secured with security personnel on site. The crew remains committed to ensuring safety and restoring conditions for potential races on Sunday.

Hockey expressed cautious optimism about resuming the event, emphasizing the community spirit that surrounds the race. “We face a big challenge rebuilding at 6 a.m., but with enough volunteers, we can get back on track. If you can lend a hand, please get in touch.”

For now, the focus remains on safety and sheltering from Storm Amy’s impact as Weston Beach awaits calmer conditions.
