Westbury Leigh Church of England Primary School has welcomed Darren McKay as its new headteacher as the school embarks on a fresh chapter aimed at raising standards and building on its strengths.
The school, which has faced challenges in meeting Ofsted’s expectations in recent years, was last rated ‘good’ in 2015 but received ‘requires improvement’ judgments in both 2019 and 2022. While behaviour, attitudes, personal development, and early years provision were regarded as good, inspectors expressed concerns about aspects of the curriculum.
Inspectors noted: “Leaders are beginning to design and put in place a more ambitious curriculum. Their efforts to improve mathematics and phonics are starting to pay off. However, in some other subjects, pupils do not gain the essential knowledge that they need to be successful. As a result, they do not consistently receive a good quality of education.”

A monitoring visit in 2023 found that progress had been made, though further work remained necessary to achieve a fully good rating.
Mr McKay, formerly headteacher at Winsley Church of England Primary School, expressed his enthusiasm about joining Westbury Leigh. “What really struck me was the potential. The school has fantastic grounds, wonderful facilities and, most importantly, amazing people." He added, “Every adult I met wanted the very best for the children. There was a real sense of care, pride and ambition, and that inspired me straight away.”
He outlined his commitment to nurturing the school community: “My job is to help people become the best they can be. That means supporting children to learn and flourish, supporting colleagues to grow and develop, and creating a culture where everyone feels they belong.”
As he settles into his new role, Mr McKay intends to prioritise listening and collaboration. “I want to listen to children, families and staff, celebrate what is already working well. Any changes we make should enhance children’s learning, wellbeing and opportunities, helping every child to succeed.”
He also emphasised the importance of partnership with parents: “Families are a child’s first educators and know their children best. Education is most successful when schools and families work together as equal partners. Together, we can help every child become the very best version of themselves.”
When asked what he hopes former pupils will say about their time at Westbury Leigh, he responded: “Westbury Leigh is the best school, and it prepared me brilliantly for secondary school and the future.”
