West Somerset Railway Reconnection Bid Gains Momentum

Efforts to reconnect West Somerset to the national rail network have gained fresh momentum following a pivotal meeting between local campaigner James Wright and Shadow Railways Minister Jerome Mayhew MP in Westminster on September 9.

The discussion focused on reinstating the Taunton–Bishops Lydeard rail link, which, if reopened, could eventually extend passenger services all the way to Minehead. Currently, the West Somerset Railway operates as the longest heritage line in the UK, running between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead. However, the absence of a regular passenger connection linking Taunton to Bishops Lydeard leaves the area disconnected from the broader national network.

James Wright emphasised the significant benefits of restoring this connection: “Reopening the rail link would be transformative. It would provide reliable transport for commuters and students, boost tourism, and strengthen the local economy. With the right political will, projects like this can become reality, and I am committed to seeing it through.”

The campaign highlights the importance of this rail link in combating rural isolation, expanding opportunities for young residents, and enhancing the visitor economy.

Earlier this year, Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, secured a critical meeting with senior Department for Transport officials to advance discussions. She has actively raised the issue with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and pledged to collaborate with Somerset Council.

In addition to the rail project, Gilmour has pointed to other pressing transport challenges in her constituency, including problematic roadworks on the A396, demands for upgrades to the A39, and the ongoing closure of the B3191.

Department for Transport’s South West Area Lead has expressed eagerness to visit Somerset to review the Bishops Lydeard–Taunton link and address wider transport concerns.

Gilmour stated, “Improving transport links is a top priority for me, particularly in rural areas where unreliable bus services and traffic congestion hinder connectivity. A new rail link would be transformational for local communities.”

James Wright is optimistic about the project’s prospects, saying, “With consistent political support, this is an achievable goal. I will continue collaborating with parliamentarians, local authorities, and the community to ensure West Somerset’s needs are front and centre.”
