The West Somerset Railway (WSR) is in the process of seeking funding from the central government to reconnect its heritage railway line to mainline railway services. The proposal aims to improve transport options and boost local connectivity for both business and leisure purposes.
The strategic outline business case (SOBC) has been jointly submitted by Somerset Council and West Somerset Railway PLC to the Department for Transport (DfT). The funding requested will support the development of a full business case, including consultation with local residents on service frequency.
If approved, the project will involve upgrading signaling and infrastructure, with the potential introduction of train services between Taunton and Bishop’s Lydeard, and possibly extending to Minehead on peak days. The plan also includes developing Bishop Lydeard as a “park and ride” hub and coordinating train services with local bus schedules.
