Wessex Water will carry out crucial sewer maintenance in the Dorset village of Chetnole commencing on 12 October 2026. The works have prompted Dorset Council to impose a temporary traffic order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, leading to the closure of five roads in the area to ensure the safety of workers and road users.
The affected roads include two sections of Deep Ford Lane, as well as Dunch Lane, Yetminster Road, and Batcombe Lane, situated near the DT9 6NX postcode. These closures are expected to remain in place until 5 November 2026, although the order allows for a duration of up to 18 months if additional work or remedial activity is necessary to complete the project.
During this period, drivers are advised to follow clearly marked local diversion routes designed to guide traffic safely around the closed sections. Motorists should anticipate delays approaching Chetnole and allow additional journey time while the maintenance is underway.

Dorset Council emphasises that these restrictions are vital to conform with health and safety regulations, providing a secure environment for the Wessex Water crews while minimising risk to all highway users.
Local residents and businesses who have concerns or may be impacted by the closures are encouraged to contact Wessex Water on 0345 600 3600 or Dorset Highways Traffic Team on 01305 221020.
Public transport services and emergency vehicles may experience altered routes or timing adjustments during the closures. Passengers should verify travel arrangements with their service providers.
It is important to note that any vehicle found to be contravening the traffic order faces potential enforcement action, including fines up to £1,000 upon summary conviction.
The temporary traffic order was formally issued by Dorset Council on 24 September 2026 and signed by Jan Britton, Executive Director for Economy and Environment. Further official details are available via Dorset Council’s public notices.
