Wells City Council is proud to announce Philip Dickson as the new Town Crier for the historic City of Wells. Phil, recently retired from a distinguished career in the Coldstream Guards, where he served notably as Band Sergeant Major, brings a wealth of experience to this timeless role.
Having settled in the West Country, Phil has been actively involved in supporting various charitable organizations. Earlier this year, he was also sworn into the King’s Body Guard, joining the Yeoman of the Guard, further exemplifying his commitment to public service.
The Town Crier role is an integral part of Wells’ heritage, symbolizing civic pride and tradition by proclaiming news and enlivening local celebrations. Phil will continue this legacy, stepping into the position after Len Swales, who will retire in May 2026 following an impressive 25 years of service.

The Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells, Cllr Louis Agabani, expressed gratitude for Len’s dedication and warmly welcomed Phil: “Len’s vibrant presence has enriched our city’s ceremonies for a quarter of a century. We are confident that Phil will honor this tradition with his own enthusiasm and ensure its vitality for generations to come.”
To ensure a seamless transition, Len Swales will mentor Phil over a nine-month handover period, sharing his expertise on civic events and ceremonial protocols. This collaboration positions Phil to confidently assume full responsibilities as Town Crier in May 2026.
