For years, Alex Gillespie and his dog Meg wandered the Somerset hills alone. Now, at 43, Alex leads a vibrant walking group that uplifts mental health by blending scenic treks with meaningful dialogue.
Hailing from Dulcote, Somerset, Alex launched the walking group for colleagues at Charlie Bigham’s, a premium meal producer. What started with just two walkers has blossomed steadily into a supportive network over the past year.
“I enjoy discovering lesser-known paths,” Alex shares. “Many people don’t realize the natural beauty right outside their doorstep. We even forage for wild garlic, sloe berries, or mushrooms – fitting for a food-loving company.”

Meg, a lively Springer Spaniel mix, often takes the lead on these outings, happily engaging with everyone and becoming a cherished member of the group.
Recently certified as a mental health first aider, Alex finds walking side by side—rather than face to face—makes sensitive conversations easier. “Being outdoors and distracted by nature helps people open up naturally,” he explains.
His training equips him to notice subtle signs of struggle. “I’m not a therapist, but I offer a judgment-free space to listen.”
This supportive approach extends beyond countryside hikes to shorter walks around the Dulcote Quarry workplace. “Sometimes even a brief stroll around the building can encourage someone to share,” Alex notes.
Charlie Bigham’s CEO, Patrick Cairns, applauds the initiative: “At Charlie Bigham’s, we aim to foster a purpose beyond profit, creating a workplace where wellbeing thrives.”
The company currently boasts 16 trained mental health first aiders and is set to expand that number in 2025. Earlier this year, Charlie Bigham’s was honored among the UK’s top 100 Best Workplaces for Wellbeing.
Pamela Schmid, People Director at the company, adds, “Our mission goes beyond crafting delicious food—we strive to build a workplace people love and to contribute to a sustainable future.”
Alex looks forward to welcoming more walkers and hopes to one day persuade company founder Charlie Bigham to join. “I’ll make sure the weather’s perfect,” he jokes.
