Wells Rugby Club Considers Relocation to Accommodate 106 Homes

Wells Rugby Club is contemplating a move to a new location on the western edge of the city to make way for 106 new homes. Currently located off Charter Way, near Wells Sports and Fitness Centre, the club has submitted a planning application in conjunction with Rowecord Holdings Ltd. to shift to a custom-built facility on the A371 Portway, north of the Wells Touring Park. This initiative is aligned with the Mendip Local Plan Part II, aiming to address the housing needs in the area.

The proposed new facility for the rugby club boasts three full-sized pitches, mini-pitches, a clubhouse building, and ample parking. The relocation would enable Stonewater to develop 106 new homes on the existing site, contributing to the city’s affordable housing needs and potentially extending the Strawberry Line active travel route.

The club’s new premises, featuring modern amenities, are designed to meet the needs of players, supporters, and the broader community. It is intended that the housing developments nearby will provide convenient access to the club’s facilities, fostering local engagement and pride.

In conjunction with these developments, plans are in place for residential projects in the vicinity, with a focus on creating a well-connected and characterful neighborhood.

Decisions on both the rugby club’s relocation and the housing developments are pending approval by Somerset Council.
