As more travellers opt to explore the UK’s inland offerings, the historic city of Wells in Somerset has been crowned the best non-coastal destination for a city break by travel specialists at Ski Vertigo. Known for its medieval market town feel despite its city status, Wells offers a charming atmosphere rich in history and character.
The selection by Ski Vertigo, which assessed locations based on visitor numbers, transport links and opening times, placed Wells at the top of the list. The city, with a population just over 12,000, boasts a unique appeal that blends the intimacy of a small town with the amenities of a city.
Many will recognise Wells as the filming location for the village of Sandford in the film Hot Fuzz, and its historic streets have also featured in productions such as Wolf Hall, Dungeons & Dragons, and Poldark. This cinematic heritage highlights Wells' outstanding historic and architectural appeal.

At the heart of the city stands Wells Cathedral, England’s first Gothic cathedral, which is largely responsible for the city’s official status. Visitors can explore the cathedral freely or join guided tours, and may enjoy refreshments at The Loft Café, which offers lovely views of the cathedral’s west front and the peaceful moat of the nearby Bishop’s Palace.
Tripadvisor users have praised the cathedral as “majestic” and a serene, welcoming space, noting it as a must-visit attraction in Wells.
Adjacent to the cathedral lies the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, the residence of the Bishops of Bath and Wells for around 800 years. Spread across 14 acres of RHS partner gardens, the site includes the iconic well pools that inspired the city’s name. Entry requires a day ticket, currently priced at £15 for adults, £7 for children and £12 for students.
Complementing its historic landmarks, Wells hosts a vibrant market in its original marketplace every Wednesday and Saturday from 9.00am to 3.00pm. The market showcases a diverse range of local artisan produce, fresh fish, unique gifts and crafts, fostering a strong community spirit.
Visitors have described the market as a “great day out” with ample shops and eateries, all under the watchful gaze of the cathedral, creating a welcoming and lively atmosphere.
Travellers should note that Wells is unusual in being a city without a train station. Visitors are advised to use bus connections such as the 376 from Bristol Temple Meads or the 173 and 174 services from Bath Spa to reach the city conveniently.
