Wells Cathedral Partially Closes to Public for Secret Film Shoot

Wells Cathedral will partially close its doors in the coming weeks as a secretive film production takes over the iconic landmark. Specifically, the North Quire Aisle Doors, Chapter House, and Chapter House Stairs will be inaccessible to visitors until Saturday, June 20.

A Cathedral representative explained, “A barrier will be put in place daily after the Morning Liturgy to restrict public access to the North Quire Aisle from the Undercroft doorway. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Though officials remain tight-lipped about the nature of the project, rumours suggest the location is being used to shoot the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot. This reboot revives the beloved 1980s classic He-Man franchise for the big screen, much to the excitement of nostalgic fans.

Set for release in 2026, the film stars Nicholas Galitzine, known for Bottoms, as He-Man, and Academy Award winner Jared Leto as Skeletor. Leto, whose varied career includes Requiem for a Dream, Panic Room, and House of Gucci, has recently taken on several comic book roles, despite mixed reactions to his portrayals of The Joker (Suicide Squad) and Morbius.

The star-studded cast also features Camila Mendes of Riverdale, Alison Brie (known for Community and GLOW), and Idris Elba, whose reputation needs no introduction. Fans visiting Wells may even spot some of these celebrities around the cathedral during filming.

Wells Cathedral is no stranger to film and television production. It appeared as a setting in the Doctor Who episode “Lazarus,” where the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, confronts a man pursuing immortality with monstrous consequences.

Historical dramas have also made use of the stunning cathedral, including The Spanish Princess, which chronicles the life of Catherine of Aragon, and Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, centered on Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s influential chancellor.

Apart from the section closures for filming, the cathedral will be completely closed to the public from Wednesday, June 4, to Friday, June 6. During this period, visitors can still attend services and access the café and gift shop, but the main cathedral space will be off-limits.

For the latest details on opening times and any updates, visitors should check Wells Cathedral’s official website.
