Wells Cathedral and Cambridge Community Mourn Young Organist Harrison Cole

The music world and local communities are mourning the loss of Harrison Cole, a gifted young organist found dead in the River Cam in Cambridge. At just 25 years old, Harrison’s sudden passing has left a profound impact on those who knew him and admired his talent.

Harrison was noted for his impressive musical journey that included being an Organ Scholar at Wells Cathedral between 2018 and 2019 before moving to Cambridge. Wells Cathedral expressed deep sorrow over his death, stating, “We pray for Harrison as he takes his place in glory, and for all who he leaves behind, that his example may lead us and God’s love surround us. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Renowned organist Anna Lapwood also paid tribute, saying, “Harrison was such a glorious person and an amazing organist. Sending all my love to his family, and to everyone in Cambridge. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”

King’s College, where Harrison was currently serving as an assisting organist, shared heartfelt condolences. Provost Gillian Tett remarked on the strong sense of loss felt across the college community, especially within the Choir and Chapel teams. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this sad time,” she said.

Harrison’s musical career was marked by dedication and achievement. After his time at Wells Cathedral, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge as an organ scholar and then served as assistant organist at Gonville and Caius College. From September 2024, he was an assisting organist at King’s College, participating in recordings, broadcasts, and international tours with the Choir.

Tragically, Harrison was found in the River Cam near King’s College on the morning of Sunday, June 7. Cambridgeshire Police have confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious and have passed the case to the coroner.

Harrison was also preparing for an exciting future in music with recent appointments as assistant organist to St Paul’s in Knightsbridge and St Michael’s in Cornhill. Friends, family, and colleagues remember him as a talented musician and an inspirational young man whose loss is deeply felt.
