Well-Used Somerset Bridge Closed Indefinitely Over Safety Concerns

The Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) has announced the indefinite closure of the footbridge spanning Hinds Pitt Pool, located near the popular Tarr Steps in Somerset. The bridge, which is a key part of the well-loved Tarr Steps circular walk, has been closed due to significant structural failure that poses a serious safety risk to the public.

Built in the 1950s, the steel components of the bridge have deteriorated over time, reaching a condition deemed unsafe for continued use. ENPA’s Access and Recreation Manager, Dan Barnett, stated, “The steel structure has suffered key failures, and for the safety of all visitors, the bridge must remain closed until further notice.”

Plans are underway to design and implement a long-term replacement. Discussions with relevant landowners and the process of securing the considerable funding required are ongoing. In the short term, ENPA is exploring temporary modifications to reopen the bridge safely before the full replacement is constructed.

Visitors can still enjoy the Tarr Steps site and surrounding area. Short walks to the site remain accessible on both sides of the river, and longer routes are fully open. The well-traveled Two Moors Way footpath is also passable using an alternative route along the west bank of the river.

ENPA is committed to restoring safe and reliable public access to this important local landmark as swiftly as possible.
