As a teenager, the trend of being ‘artfully dishevelled’ was the ultimate style — appearing effortlessly casual while actually putting in a lot of effort. This meticulously careless look, from tousled hair to perfectly styled worn-in trainers and oversized shirts, was all about appearing laid-back and cool.
Though this fashion trend has faded, its spirit has found a new home in British cafes and restaurants. The so-called ‘under construction’ chic is a deliberate design choice signaling to customers: “We’re relaxed, approachable, and far from the uniformity of corporate chains.”
Finca, a cozy coffee house in Yeovil, embraces this minimalist aesthetic wholeheartedly. With walls adorned by empty coffee sacks, bare wooden panels, and simple hanging lights resembling the rustic Pinterest wedding trends from years ago, Finca creates a comforting, down-to-earth atmosphere that stands out amid national chains dominating the high street.

I opted to take refuge from the May sunshine indoors, where the warm and friendly staff immediately made me feel welcome. Finca is a proud regional chain roasting its beans locally in nearby Dorchester, with locations in Glastonbury, Dorchester, Poundbury, Weymouth, and Yeovil.
The coffee selection impressed me—three distinct beans offered for customers to choose from. I selected the Guatemalan roast in an unsweetened iced latte (£3.60), which was a refreshing jolt: vibrantly bitter and perfectly crafted. A chat with the knowledgeable barista revealed their passion and expertise, giving me confidence in the team behind the counter.
Currently rooted in Dorset and Somerset, Finca has already made its mark in an intensely competitive market filled with big-name chains. Given its popularity and authentic charm, it seems likely that this laid-back local brand could grow much beyond the West Country. For now, Finca is the place to be; who knows—tomorrow it might be a global coffee giant.
Finca in Yeovil welcomes visitors seven days a week, Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 5:30 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.
