We Explored the Newly Refurbished Portishead Lido Following a £1.7 Million Upgrade

Swimming options in Portishead are limited — the marina and nearby beaches aren’t safe for a dip. The Bristol Channel’s runoff often compromises water quality, and the busy shipping traffic around Portishead makes open water swimming risky.

But now, residents and visitors alike can enjoy the town’s iconic outdoor pool, which reopened at 2pm on Easter Saturday after a major £1.7 million refurbishment. The Portishead Open Air Pool has been revitalized with fresh paint, cleaned patios, and brand-new furniture, all thanks to dedicated volunteers.

One of the highlights of the upgrade is the installation of eco-friendly solar panels, which heat the outdoor pool. This means bathers can enjoy warmer waters than many indoor pools, a welcome feature given Portishead’s typically chilly sea breezes and gusty winds.

The adjacent Café Lido has also resumed operations with extended opening hours and is currently welcoming new volunteers. This reopening attracted attention on a national scale, highlighting the significance of the project.

Despite the widespread publicity, an unexpected discovery emerged during interviews with local residents: many had no idea the lido was back in action. While news of other community developments like the new skatepark and railway line reopening seemed common knowledge, the lido’s revitalization flew under the radar for most.

Even those chatting just steps from the pool expressed surprise at the refurbishment news. On a calm Wednesday afternoon visit, the pool was quiet, though it wasn’t peak time or tourist season.

This contrast poses an intriguing scenario: a renovation that captured national headlines but has yet to resonate with the immediate community. It raises questions about whether the lido serves more as a tourist attraction or if local water lovers were simply away during our visit.

For those interested, Portishead Lido operates daily. Café Lido welcomes guests Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, and on weekends from 9am to 4pm.
