Swimming in Portishead isn’t as straightforward as you might think. The local marina and nearby beaches aren’t safe for a dip—water quality issues from the Bristol Channel’s run-off and the constant flow of cargo ships and pleasure boats make it risky. Despite its close proximity to the water, the town has long lacked accessible, safe swimming options.
That changed recently when Portishead’s iconic Open Air Pool reopened on Easter Saturday at 2pm, following an extensive £1.7 million refurbishment. The transformation breathes new life into this outdoor facility, making it a welcoming retreat for swimmers in the area.
In preparation for the reopening, a dedicated team of volunteers freshened up the space by repainting walls, power-washing patios, and installing new outdoor furniture. Environmentally conscious improvements include the installation of solar panels that now heat the pool, keeping it warmer than many indoor pools. This is especially welcomed given Portishead’s typical chilly sea breezes and gusty conditions.

The revival of the on-site Café Lido is another highlight, with extended opening hours from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 9am to 4pm on weekends. The café is actively seeking new volunteers to support its operation. The reopening made waves nationally, drawing attention to Portishead’s renewed recreational gem.
However, what’s surprising is how little local residents seem to know about these changes. During our recent visit, none of the locals we spoke to—even those just meters from the lido—were aware of the refurbishment or the pool’s reopening. Instead, they were more familiar with other community developments like the new skatepark, the reopening of the Portishead railway line, and the town council’s asset transfer from North Somerset Council.
On a quiet Wednesday afternoon, the pool was open but not busy, underscoring that it was not yet peak season or time for prime hours of use.
This situation highlights an interesting paradox: while the revamped lido garnered significant national media coverage, it appears under the radar for many of the very people it serves. It could be that the lido attracts more visitors and tourists than local swimmers, or perhaps locals simply haven’t had the time to discover their reinvigorated swimming spot amid other community buzz.
For those keen to visit, Portishead Lido is now open seven days a week, providing a refreshing outdoor swimming option with the comfort of a heated pool. Café Lido welcomes visitors daily as well, making it a great place for locals and tourists alike to relax and enjoy Portishead’s unique waterfront atmosphere.
