After 17 years of serving the community and championing charitable causes, Watchet Community Bookshop, also known as Harbour Community Bookshop, will be closing its doors permanently at the end of September.
Established in 2006 and operated entirely by dedicated local volunteers, the bookshop has been sustained by donated books and the unwavering support of customers from Watchet and surrounding areas. This unique community hub has impressively raised over £165,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and provided more than £100,000 in grants to support local charitable projects and organizations.
In their closing statement, the bookshop team shared: “After much reflection, we have decided that this season will be our last. Over 17 incredible years, we have far exceeded our goals, contributing £200,000 to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust alongside significant support for local voluntary groups. Our mission has been fulfilled.”

They expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community: “We are deeply indebted to everyone who donated books, shopped with us, and supported our mission. Your generosity made all the difference. Thank you for being a part of this journey.”
News of the closure sparked an outpouring of appreciation from the community. Visitors recalled their fond memories and the shop’s impact, with one remarking, “You will be dearly missed. My 91-year-old mother always makes a point to visit your shop when she comes to Watchet.” Another added, “The bookshop was a must-visit for my daughters and one of the best we’ve ever seen.”
Local residents also acknowledged the bookshop’s role beyond fundraising, highlighting its support for events like the local flower and dog shows and its contribution to positioning Watchet as a notable destination.
The bookshop will continue to accept book donations until the end of July and maintain regular opening hours until closing in late September. Operating seven days a week, the hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays.
