Warning Issued Over Impact of Town Centre Roadworks on Taunton Retailers

Local councillor John Hunt has issued a warning, stating that Taunton retailers will “suffer very badly” if upcoming town centre roadworks lead to jams, especially over the Christmas period. Somerset Council is set to begin work on November 11 to upgrade two crucial junctions on the A38 Hurdle Way, a route that handles significant traffic moving through the heart of Taunton.

The scheme, which will last until early-April 2025 with a two-week break over the festive season, aims to enhance traffic signals and install a new cycle lane. While this promises faster and smoother journeys for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and bus passengers, Councillor Hunt emphasized the need to prevent congestion in the lead-up to Christmas and throughout the winter to mitigate the impact on local small businesses.

The first phase of work, between November 11 and December 20, will focus on the B3170 Mansfield Road, where a new cycle lane will be implemented. Following a temporary pause from December 20 to January 6, 2025, the installation of new traffic signals will commence under temporary traffic lights in both directions. The renovated junctions, aiming to provide more priority to buses and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, are expected to be fully operational by April 2, 2025.

Councillor Hunt expressed concerns about the potential disruptions to local residents and businesses, particularly during the holiday season. While acknowledging the efforts of the contractors and the assurances received by some traders, he stressed the possible negative impact on retailers and the residents in the affected areas.

Portfolio holder for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, emphasized that all road users would benefit from the changes once the scheme is completed next year. He highlighted the importance of upgrading the aging traffic signals and implementing better cycling and pedestrian provisions to improve the overall traffic management in Taunton.

While the investments aim to bring long-term improvements to the transport infrastructure, the council is urged to prioritize minimizing disruptions during the upcoming roadworks to support the local businesses during the crucial festive period.
