Warning Issued After ‘Significant’ Cliff Fall at South West Beach

A “significant” rockfall has occurred near a beach in Devon, prompting warnings for those near the cliffs. The Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team reported the incident at Budleigh Salterton on Thursday, April 17.

The rockfall occurred just west of Steamer Steps, with the coastguard attributing it to fluctuating weather conditions. Images shared by a spokesperson showed a large amount of rubble below the clifftop and the emergence of significant cracks.

People are being urged to take extra care in the vicinity of the cliffs due to the changing weather conditions, as a winters worth of wet weather has been followed by warm and sunny days and then very wet weather again.

Budleigh Salterton is known for regular cliff falls, with another incident captured in March. Additionally, a recent collapse at Seaton led to shock as people were seen sitting beneath the affected area, risking their safety.

During the Seaton incident, coastguards warned the public to avoid the area due to continuing debris fall, believed to be triggered by the recent wet, winter weather.

The Seaton cliff collapse occurred on Saturday, March 1, with images from the scene showing the extent of the fall and scattered debris on the beach, including one image of an individual seated amidst the rubble.
