‘Warm and quirky’ Bath restaurant celebrates a decade with exciting plans ahead

The Ivy Bath Brasserie and Garden has marked nearly ten years since opening its doors on Milsom Street, becoming a cherished institution within the city. Housed in the beautifully restored former NatWest bank building at the heart of this iconic street, it has long been a preferred destination for birthdays, graduations, and celebrations across Bath.

The restaurant has attracted a loyal following, including local cherished actor the late Anthony Head, who once named The Ivy’s tuna carpaccio as his all-time favourite starter during the Off-Menu podcast.

While The Ivy brand operates in various locations across the United Kingdom, Bath’s branch offers a distinct charm. Nestled in a smaller, more intimate setting, it boasts unique décor, curated artwork, and a prime location that together cultivate a warm and friendly atmosphere unmatched by its sister sites.

Newly appointed general manager Matt Glister brings fresh energy and ambitious ideas to The Ivy Bath. After a successful tenure managing The Ivy in Cardiff, Matt is now focused on strengthening community ties and enhancing the restaurant’s appeal. He shared his enthusiasm for Bath and plans for the coming months.

“Bath is an extraordinary city unlike any other,” Matt explained. “Being situated right in the heart of this stunning city on Milsom Street allows us to engage closely with locals, businesses, and visitors alike. We take pride in contributing to the community by collaborating with Bath Rugby, the Theatre Royal, and the local universities.”

Matt highlighted the innovative promotions the brasserie has recently introduced, designed to offer added value and connectivity. These include a free glass of champagne for anyone wearing a Bath Rugby shirt next season and a special £19.66 menu during the Football World Cup, commemorating England’s iconic 1966 victory. Throughout the summer, the restaurant has featured a “Golden Summer” menu offering two courses for £19.95 at lunch.

“We cherish being part of this remarkable city,” Matt said. “Our clientele is a vibrant mix of locals, regulars, and tourists from all corners of the globe. We remain open daily from early morning until late evening, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, as well as beverages from fresh coffee to crafted cocktails.”

The Ivy brand has long been linked with celebration, and Bath itself historically resonates with festivities, from Jane Austen and Charles Dickens’ literary depictions to its Roman roots. Today, the restaurant offers a warm, inviting haven where guests can momentarily escape daily stresses amid arty, quirky décor, crisp white tablecloths, and attentive service.

Diners often dress up to savour signature dishes such as the famed duck salad, shepherd’s pie, and classic fish and chips, enjoying the elegant dining room’s opulence as the city buzzes outside.

Matt’s extensive experience spans working in top restaurants both domestically and abroad, including expertise as a sommelier. Under his leadership, The Ivy Bath employs around 120 full and part-time staff, with a strong focus on thorough training and support across all roles.

One major recent initiative has been the refurbishment of the upstairs terrace, enhancing its integration into the main restaurant and creating a charming spot for summer dining and drinks. The adjacent upstairs bar has also been revitalised to welcome those seeking cocktails or a casual drink.

“These are truly exciting times for The Ivy in Bath,” Matt remarked. “As we approach our tenth anniversary in this wonderful city, we remain committed to innovating, embracing the community, and offering exceptional hospitality.

“We are immensely proud to be part of Bath’s business and social fabric and look forward to many more years of serving locals and visitors alike,” he added.
