Since its launch in May, the walking football program for people with Parkinson’s at Portishead Town FC has experienced remarkable growth. What began with just a few participants has blossomed into a thriving group of more than fourteen regular players, drawing up to twenty attendees weekly for training and matches at the club’s grounds.
Supported by the Walking Football Association and local Parkinson’s organizations, this inclusive initiative highlights the physical and mental advantages of staying active despite the challenges of Parkinson’s. The club’s organizers are already planning the first regional walking football tournament set for 2026, aiming to showcase the sport’s ability to enhance quality of life for those affected.
Walking football — a slower-paced, low-impact variant of traditional football — is quickly gaining popularity among people with Parkinson’s. Its benefits are extensive, including improved balance and coordination, decreased fall risk, enhanced cardiovascular health, better sleep and energy levels, as well as increased social engagement and overall wellbeing.
