Stephen Walker’s third goal in as many games proved decisive as Yeovil Town clinched a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City U21s at Huish Park on Saturday.
The forward’s superb finish inside the opening two minutes set the tone for an engaging match. Despite numerous changes throughout the game, manager Billy Rowley’s squad demonstrated both attacking flair and defensive resilience to maintain their positive momentum ahead of the new season.
After a recent draw with Merthyr Town, Rowley rotated his lineup to boost player fitness and explore different tactical options.

Yeovil made an immediate impact as Walker built on his impressive scoring streak. Receiving a pass from Brett McGavin, Walker skillfully created space before curling a spectacular shot into the top corner, giving the Glovers an early lead.
The team nearly doubled their advantage shortly after when Mason Obeng burst forward from the left, cutting inside and firing narrowly wide.
Ryan Jones was also a consistent threat with his pace and direct runs. After cutting in from the right flank, he tested Cardiff goalkeeper Jake Dennis with a low shot, which was safely collected.
Yeovil continued to press in the final third, with strong interplay between Obeng and Luke McCormick down the left channel. McCormick’s cross, however, was eventually cleared by Cardiff’s defence.
Archie Davies impressed with a dynamic run that opened space for Walker, who struck the post in a close attempt on goal. Loick Ayina headed wide from a Jones corner, and McCormick saw a deflected shot saved after a powerful run.
Walker appeared to net a second goal later in the half, but it was ruled out for offside. Showing his versatility, he then set up McCormick, whose long-range effort soared over the crossbar.
The first half ended with McGavin curling a free-kick that forced Dennis into a smart save.
In the second half, Johl Powell and Slavi Spasov were introduced, with Yeovil maintaining the upper hand offensively. A slick move between Jones and Davies led to a dangerous cross that Spasov just missed connecting with.
Jones narrowly missed on a shooting opportunity following a deft control of a long ball. As the game progressed, Cardiff grew into the match, but Yeovil’s goalkeeper Jos Barker was in fine form, making crucial saves with his feet to deny Mannie Barton and later reacting strongly to block a shot from Hayden Allmark.
Additional substitutions, including the introduction of three trialists, did little to dampen Yeovil’s attacking intent. Spasov’s clever movement inside the box set up Powell, who narrowly missed with a shot late in the game.
In the final moments, Barker produced another sharp save to deny Gabriel Keita, helping preserve a clean sheet and secure a valuable victory for the Glovers.
