Bewley Homes has received planning permission to develop 88 new houses on the edge of Holt, situated between Bradford-on-Avon and Melksham. The approval followed thoughtful revisions to the original plans, which faced criticism earlier this year.
After consultations with Holt Parish Council and Wiltshire Council, Bewley Homes reduced the number of homes from 90 to 88 and replaced taller, two-and-a-half-storey flats with two-storey almshouse-style maisonettes. These changes were designed to better reflect the village’s traditional character.
The development will feature a large, functional green space at its center, complemented by a new children’s play area and a community orchard, enhancing the neighborhood’s appeal and fostering community spirit.

The parish council unanimously supported the revised plans, which were subsequently approved by Wiltshire Council planners.
Andrew Brooks, Managing Director of Bewley Homes, expressed satisfaction with the outcome: “This approval is the result of a focused and collaborative process with the parish and Wiltshire Council. The swift seven-week determination period highlights the benefits of clear communication and shared goals. Our design respects Holt’s character while delivering much-needed homes, biodiversity improvements, and inclusive community areas. We’re excited to bring this scheme to life and contribute to the village’s future.”
Steve Siddall, Chair of Holt Parish Council, praised the constructive partnership: “Through ongoing dialogue, we worked closely with Bewley Homes and Wiltshire Council officers to improve layout, materials, landscaping, housing mix, and character. The architect drew on the Holt Village Character Statement to ensure the development fits naturally within the existing environment.”
