Vibrant Somerset Town Celebrates Reversal of Parking Charges

North Somerset Council has reversed part of its controversial parking charge policy for the Station Road Car Park in Nailsea, much to the relief of local residents and businesses.

Parking charges introduced last June sparked concerns from the community, who feared the fees would negatively impact the town’s economy. In response to these concerns, the council has reduced the parking tariffs to encourage longer visits and support local commerce.

Under the new rates, visitors can park for two hours for just £1, three hours for £2.50, or a full day for £3.50. These adjustments replace the previous charges of £1 for one hour and £1.50 for two hours, making parking more affordable and visitor-friendly.

Jo Duffy, Clerk and CEO of Nailsea Town Council, expressed cautious optimism: “While we initially opposed the introduction of parking charges, we welcome this reduction as a positive step forward. It will make it easier for visitors to stay longer and enjoy all that Nailsea has to offer. We also appreciate North Somerset Council’s plans to improve Station Road Car Park, enhancing the overall visitor experience.”

The planned improvements include refreshed bay lining, new bike storage facilities, resurfacing work, and clearing overgrown vegetation. These enhancements will contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.

Councillor Mark Canniford, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places and Service Transformation, emphasized the council’s commitment to ongoing review. “We will monitor parking usage with six and twelve-month reviews to ensure our parking strategy meets the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Lower costs are designed to encourage longer stays and support the local economy.”

He also noted that over 44,000 parking tickets had been sold in the first six months since the charges were introduced, funding these vital improvements.

Councillor Rod Lees, Chair of Nailsea Town Council, highlighted the town’s vitality: “Nailsea boasts a lively town centre with a fantastic mix of independent shops, well-known retailers, award-winning cafés, pubs, and restaurants—all within a short walk of our car parks. The monthly Somerset Farmers’ Market adds to the vibrant atmosphere, drawing visitors with over 50 stalls of local produce.”

The revised parking tariffs take effect from 1 June, with the car park improvements scheduled for completion by summer. The changes aim to foster a thriving, welcoming town centre where visitors and locals alike can enjoy a richer experience.
