Vibrant Somerset Town Celebrates Parking Fee Reduction and Upgrades

North Somerset Council has responded to community feedback by revising parking charges at Nailsea’s Station Road Car Park, following concerns that initial fees would negatively impact the local economy.

When charges were introduced last June, the town expressed worry that the costs would discourage visitors and harm local businesses. In response, the council has lowered the rates to encourage longer visits: parking is now £1 for 2 hours, £2.50 for 3 hours, and £3.50 for a full day—significantly more affordable than the previous £1 for one hour and £1.50 for two hours.

Jo Duffy, Clerk and CEO of Nailsea Town Council, welcomed the adjustment, stating, “While we initially opposed the introduction of parking charges, these reduced fees represent a positive step forward. They will make it easier for visitors to stay longer and enjoy all that Nailsea offers.” The council also appreciates North Somerset Council’s commitment to improving the car park’s facilities.

Planned enhancements include refreshed bay lining, new bike storage, resurfacing, regular cleaning, and maintenance of surrounding vegetation, aiming to create a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

Councillor Mark Canniford, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places and Service Transformation, emphasized the value of ongoing reviews of parking management to balance the needs of locals, businesses, and visitors. “Nailsea is a lively town with much to offer. We hope the lower parking fees encourage people to explore our high street, support local businesses, and enjoy extended visits.”

Since the introduction of parking charges, over 44,000 tickets have been sold in six months, generating funds that enable these improvements. Councillor Canniford looks forward to continued collaboration with Nailsea Town Council and the community to further enhance parking facilities.

Councillor Rod Lees, Chair of Nailsea Town Council, highlighted the town’s vibrant centre, featuring a mix of independent shops, popular retailers, award-winning cafés, pubs, and restaurants—all within a short stroll from the car parks. He also noted the monthly Somerset Farmers’ Market, bringing over 50 local produce stalls to the High Street on the third Saturday of each month.

“We invite everyone to support Nailsea’s businesses and keep our town centre thriving and full of life,” said Councillor Lees.

The revised parking tariffs will take effect from 1 June, with improvement works scheduled for completion this summer.
