Wells Cathedral will come alive with music and memories on November 1 as Somerset marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a touching Festival of Remembrance. This significant event, organized by the Somerset County branch of the Royal British Legion, offers a rare chance to honor WWII veterans in person and share their invaluable stories, recorded in intimate interviews, with the public.
The commemorative evening runs from 7pm to 9:30pm and celebrates the bravery and sacrifices made by Somerset’s people during the war—both those who fought overseas and those who supported efforts at home. Highlighting the event are performances by the Central Band of the Royal British Legion and the Yeovilton Military Wives Choir, bringing stirring musical tributes to the solemn occasion. A ceremonial poppy drop during the Act of Remembrance, alongside the parade of the Somerset Book of Honour, will deepen the evening’s reflective atmosphere.
The program follows a thematic journey through Somerset’s wartime experience, from the initial mobilisation to liberation and the enduring legacy left behind. Former BBC correspondents Ali Vowles and Clinton Rogers will skillfully present the evening’s proceedings.

Commodore Robert Mansergh, Somerset County President of the Royal British Legion, expressed his hope for a strong community turnout: “I truly hope Somerset comes together to honor the service and sacrifice of its people during one of the most challenging periods in our history. Hearing directly from veterans who lived through those times will be profoundly moving. This night promises powerful memories enhanced by exceptional musical performances.”
Somerset’s Lord-Lieutenant, Mohammed Saddiq, who will attend as guest of honour, reflected, “We owe a profound debt of gratitude to all those who served. Their sacrifices have secured the freedoms we cherish today. This service is a powerful reminder of that debt.”
