Urging Respect for Retail Workers on Boxing Day

Local MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, Dan Norris, is urging the public to be respectful to retail workers on Boxing Day. Concerned about potential tensions during the busy sales period, Norris emphasized the need for calm and highlighted the alarming rates of abuse suffered by shop workers. He stressed the importance of supporting local businesses while treating shop workers with the respect they deserve.

According to a 2024 survey by Usdaw, 69% of shop workers have experienced verbal abuse, 45% have been threatened, and 17% have been assaulted in their careers. Norris called for a better shopping experience for everyone, emphasizing that abuse should never be a part of a shop worker’s job.

Addressing the issue of assaulting shop workers, Norris supported efforts to establish a specific offence for such acts. While the government had previously expressed reluctance, a proposed new specific offence announced in November 2024 could see perpetrators facing up to six months in prison for assaulting retail workers.

In addition to advocating for the protection of shop workers, Norris has taken steps to support local businesses through a grant scheme. The Safer Shops West grant provides funding for security equipment to independent shops impacted by shoplifting in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, or South Gloucestershire.

As tensions may rise during the busy shopping period, the plea for respect towards shop workers is a timely reminder for the public to support local businesses and ensure a safe and respectful shopping environment for all.
