Urgent Safety Concerns Raised Over Cheddar Road Used by Schoolchildren

A concerned Somerset resident has highlighted pressing safety issues on Wedmore Road in Cheddar, a busy route frequently used by children walking to school. Despite the 30mph speed limit, the road’s three commonly used pedestrian crossings lack clear markings and warning signs, making them potentially hazardous for young pedestrians and their families.

Wedmore Road serves as a vital connection to several local educational institutions, including Cheddar First School, Fairlands Middle School, Kings Academy, and Little Adventures Nursery. Residents and parents express growing fears about the risk of accidents, with one community member warning, “Parents and residents witness this dangerous situation daily, fearing the morning a child will be seriously injured – or worse.”

After raising these concerns with Somerset Council, the resident received a response acknowledging the seriousness of road safety while citing budget limitations as a challenge in prioritizing highway improvements. A council spokesperson reiterated their commitment to safety, encouraging community members to engage with local authorities and networks to explore potential solutions.
