A group of urban explorers made a distressing discovery in Somerset when they found a man deceased on a toilet during an exploration of a house presumed to be abandoned.
In a detailed post on Facebook, the teams Mission_urbex and Just Looking Explorers recounted their experience at the property, which belonged to a man named John. Despite initial impressions that the home was deserted, the explorers noted that many of John’s possessions remained inside, suggesting the house may not have been completely abandoned.
Their exploration took place in 2025. After first encountering the property with its back door damaged and ajar, they were uncertain about the house’s status and temporarily left to explore a nearby hotel. However, the explorers’ curiosity brought them back later to take a closer look.

They described the state of the home: coats and hats hung by the door, the bed was unmade, and everyday items filled the rooms. Outside, John’s small red car sat unused and decaying, clearly stationary for years. During their survey, they gradually realised the house was not deserted in the usual sense.
Tragically, they then discovered John deceased on the toilet. They immediately called emergency services, and both police and ambulance responded to the scene. The explorers said, “What started as a normal explore became something none of us will ever forget.”
Reflecting on the experience, they expressed some comfort in having returned when they did, fearing that without their intervention John might have remained undiscovered for much longer.
They also addressed requests for the location of the house, emphasising the importance of respecting John’s privacy and the home’s state. They stated that some locations are better kept confidential to prevent looting or damage.
The post prompted mixed reactions online. Some criticised the explorers for sharing the details publicly, calling it a violation of privacy and disrespectful. Others appreciated the discovery, acknowledging that John could now be laid to rest with dignity.
Responding to the feedback, Mission_urbex clarified their intentions were never to exploit or disrespect John. They explained that they ceased exploration as soon as they found him and immediately notified authorities. The post was shared in the hope it might encourage others to check on elderly or isolated neighbours to prevent similar situations.
They concluded by acknowledging that while some may find their post inappropriate, they shared it to highlight a real issue: people living alone who may pass away unnoticed. They urged readers to consider the message and remember the importance of community care and compassion.
