Urban explorers discover deceased man in ‘abandoned’ Somerset home

A group of urban explorers made a distressing discovery while investigating a property they believed to be abandoned in Somerset. The explorers, associated with Mission_urbex and Just Looking Explorers, found the body of an elderly man, referred to as John, inside the home in 2025.

Initially, the property appeared unoccupied, with signs such as a damaged back door left open. However, belongings found inside, including coats, hats, and an unmade bed, suggested someone had been living there. A small red car outside had not been used for years, adding to the uncertainty about the house’s status.

After deciding to return for a closer inspection, the group made the somber discovery of John deceased on the toilet. Emergency services were contacted promptly, and both police and ambulance attended the scene.

In a statement shared on Facebook alongside photographs of the property, the explorers reflected on the experience: “What started as a routine explore became something none of us will ever forget. While it was distressing to find John in such circumstances, we are relieved to have discovered him when we did. The alternative might have been much worse.”

The team emphasised their respect for John’s home and declined to share its exact location to prevent disturbance or looting, stating that some sites deserve privacy and reverence.

The post sparked a range of reactions from the public. Some criticised the explorers for sharing the discovery online, describing it as a violation of privacy and disrespectful. Others expressed gratitude that John was found and laid to rest, praising the explorers for their actions.

Responding to the debate, Mission_urbex clarified their intentions: “Our post was never meant to disrespect John or exploit his situation. We were unaware of his presence during the initial visit and took immediate steps when we found him. The purpose of sharing this is to highlight the reality that isolated individuals may pass away unnoticed. We hope it encourages people to check in on elderly or lonely neighbours.”

The explorers acknowledged the sensitivity of the subject, admitting the post might not sit well with everyone, but upheld the importance of awareness and community support.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges some individuals face in isolation and underlines the value of community vigilance and care.
