Uniqlo to Open First Somerset Store in Bath’s SouthGate Centre

Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo is set to open its first store in Somerset, located in the heart of Bath. Bath and North East Somerset Council recently approved plans for a new Uniqlo shop on Saint Lawrence Street within the SouthGate shopping centre.

The planning documents reveal that the existing unit will undergo refurbishment to enhance both its appearance and functionality, preparing it for Uniqlo’s arrival. While the exact opening date has yet to be announced, the news has already sparked excitement among Bath residents. One local commented on social media, saying, “That’ll do nicely, thank you.”

The announcement has also led to discussions about other international brands locals hope to see in Bath, with names like John Lewis, Søstrene Grene, and Muji frequently mentioned.

Uniqlo’s expansion in the South West mirrors its plans in nearby Bristol, where a store at Cabot Circus is slated to open this spring. Speaking to Bristol Live, Uniqlo UK COO Alessandro Dudech emphasized the brand’s commitment to growing its physical presence and e-commerce operations across the UK.

SouthGate is an open-air shopping destination in central Bath featuring over 60 retailers. It recently gained attention with the opening of a flagship, four-storey Marks & Spencer store. Laurence Budden, Senior Asset Manager at British Land, which owns SouthGate, described the arrival of M&S as the start of a “transformational year” for the centre. He hinted at more upcoming developments, highlighting recent additions such as Sunglass Hut, Zara, and Rituals.

With its prime location and excellent transport links, SouthGate is positioning itself as one of Bath’s premier shopping destinations. Uniqlo’s arrival is set to add to the centre’s growing appeal, delivering a fresh retail experience to the city.

Uniqlo has been approached for comment regarding the new Bath store.
