Brownsea Island, located off the Dorset coast, is embracing its rich history with the introduction of a British Sign Language (BSL) trail. This innovative self-guided tour utilizes video-linked BSL signs placed at various points of interest across the island, all accessible by scanning a QR code with a mobile phone. From exploring the ruins of a fort built by Henry VIII to discovering the stories of the island’s past and present custodians, visitors can now unlock centuries of history with a simple wave of their phone.
Senior volunteer and community officer, Dania Schmitz-Vaughan, expressed pride in the launch of this new historical guided walk in BSL, highlighting the collaborative effort with the local community and BSL services and training organization, Remark! The trail has already received positive feedback from visitors, signifying a promising experience for future participants.
The National Trust’s initiative to enhance accessibility on Brownsea Island also offers options for wheelchair users, including a specially designed landing craft and the provision of all-terrain manual wheelchairs and walking poles. Additionally, sensory support is available through themed backpacks containing essential items like ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, and binoculars for an inclusive experience in the island’s diverse environments.
