Tributes have poured in for Terry Hutt, famously known as the UK’s top royal superfan and affectionately dubbed the ‘Union Jack man’ by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Terry, who held the record for meeting the Queen more times than any other member of the public, has died aged 91.
A resident of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, Terry gained international attention for his dedication, famously camping outside hospitals for nights on end ahead of royal births. His unwavering devotion to the royal family was matched by his tireless campaigning for the NHS and the restoration of the historic Birnbeck Pier.
Widely seen zipping around his hometown on his scooter, Terry collected thousands of signatures to support his causes. His daughter, Tracey Joy, reflected on his life: “A life well lived. Even as we grieve, we remember his remarkable fight for life and unconditional love for his family. Despite battling kidney cancer and enduring multiple surgeries, he remained resilient. His passing from heart failure, pneumonia, and sepsis marks the end of an extraordinary journey.”

Terry’s royal admiration began early—at just four years old when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited his family in London after the Blitz and gifted him a souvenir mug.
In 2015, Terry spent a memorable 14 days stationed on a red, white, and blue-decorated bench outside St Mary’s Hospital in London, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Princess Charlotte. Describing the experience in the Weston Mercury, he likened the vigil to a “full-time job,” proudly preparing gifts and an outfit for the newborn royal. “I’ve known William and the family for years, and there’s always a thrill in seeing new babies,” Terry said. “We need babies to keep the family going— the more there are, the better.”
