UK’s Best Small Towns Named: The Surprising Winner

The charming community of Wells in Somerset has been announced as the best ‘town or village’ in the UK by Which? magazine. Notably, Wells is actually classified as a city, renowned for its historic architecture and iconic cathedral. Situated in the Mendip district amidst picturesque countryside, Wells embodies quintessential British charm.

According to Which?, the two highest-rated small towns in the UK are both found in the South West, specifically in the neighbouring counties of Somerset and Wiltshire. Wells topped the survey, followed closely by Avebury in Wiltshire.

More than 9,000 Which? members voted on inland towns and villages they had visited, resulting in top rankings not only for Wells and Avebury but also for other towns spread across Scotland, Dorset, North Wales, and the Lake District.

Despite its modest scale, Wells offers visitors a wealth of attractions. Its convenient location allows easy access from nearby cities such as Bristol, Cardiff, and Bath. The highlight is undoubtedly Wells Cathedral, a remarkable landmark that draws many visitors each year.

One Tripadvisor reviewer shared their experience: “We bought the combined ticket for Wells Cathedral and the Palace/Gardens next door. Both are amazing and made for an awe-inspiring afternoon. Allow a couple of hours to fully appreciate everything. The cathedral is breathtaking, and it was wonderful to explore inside after previously only seeing it from outside. Highly recommended!”

While in Wells, a visit to the vibrant market square and a stroll through the beautiful Milton Lodge Gardens are essential.

Wells achieved an impressive overall destination rating of 83% in Which?’s survey. It scored highly for its food scene, visitor attractions, scenic beauty, shopping, and peaceful atmosphere – making it a perfect getaway destination.
