Two Injured as Lorry Catches Fire Following Collision on A303

Two individuals have been hospitalized after a lorry collided with a broken-down car and subsequently caught fire on the westbound carriageway of the A303 near Mere on Monday, July 21. The incident occurred just before 10:30 a.m. when the lorry struck the stationary vehicle, veered off the road, and descended a 10-foot grass verge.

Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, extinguishing the blaze and attending to the injured. Among the hospitalized is the lorry driver, a man in his 50s. Fortunately, neither patient sustained serious injuries, according to official reports.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the crash. National Highways has implemented a diversion for westbound traffic, advising drivers to follow the designated solid square diversion route.

The recovery process is expected to be lengthy, as the lorry came to rest 10 feet down a grass verge. Several trees will need to be removed to facilitate the vehicle’s retrieval.

A spokesperson from Wiltshire Police stated: “We responded to reports of a lorry on fire on the westbound carriageway of the A303 near Mere just before 10:30 a.m. following a collision with a broken-down vehicle. Two people, including the driver of the lorry, were taken to hospital with minor injuries. No arrests have been made.”

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) also provided a statement: “We were called at 10:33 a.m. to a road traffic collision near Mere. Two double-crewed land ambulances and a tactical commander were dispatched. One patient was transported to Yeovil District Hospital and another to Salisbury District Hospital.”
