Two-Hour Delays on M5 Following Major Multi-Vehicle Crash

Severe traffic delays are gripping the M5 motorway in Somerset this evening, Monday, May 19, after a major crash involving several vehicles. The collision occurred between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, leading to a complete standstill and significant disruption.

Currently, two lanes of the M5 remain closed, with debris scattered across the roadway, worsening the traffic conditions. Motorists are advised to expect delays of up to two hours as tailbacks stretch from junction 20 to junction 21, extending as far back as Portishead with roughly seven miles of congestion.

National Highways has confirmed that emergency services are on-site managing the incident. Their statement reads: “Traffic is held on the M5 south in Somerset between J20 and J21 due to a multi-vehicle collision. National Highways traffic officers are assisting police in clearing vehicles from live lanes and dealing with debris.”

Reports from drivers describe long periods of standstill traffic in the affected area, and traffic monitoring service Inrix first recorded the incident at 5:16 pm, noting: “Long delays and two lanes closed due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 southbound from J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon) to J21 A370 (Weston-super-Mare).”

Motorists planning to use this section of the M5 are urged to allow extra time for their journey and stay updated on ongoing developments.
