Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the sudden and unexplained death of a baby in Crewkerne, Somerset. Avon and Somerset Police were alerted by the ambulance service shortly before 2:45 pm on Sunday, 16 August, to a residential address where the infant was reported to be critically ill. Tragically, the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The police have described the death as unexplained based on an initial forensic postmortem examination. A man and a woman were taken into custody on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child. Both were given the opportunity to provide their account under caution, with legal representation present if they chose. They have since been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated, “Our investigation is at a very early stage, and we ask the public to refrain from speculation while we gather and review crucial information. We understand that news of this infant’s death will be deeply distressing, especially within the local community. However, we want to reassure everyone that there is no indication of any wider risk to public safety.”
