Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the sudden and unexplained death of a baby in the Somerset town of Crewkerne.
Avon and Somerset Police responded to a call from the ambulance service at a residential property in Crewkerne shortly before 2:45pm on Sunday, 16 August. Upon arrival, officers were informed that a young infant was critically ill. Sadly, the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The death is currently being treated as unexplained following an initial forensic post-mortem examination. In the course of their investigation, police arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child. Both were given the opportunity to provide a statement under caution, with legal representation if they wished.

They have since been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Our investigation is still at an early stage, and we are working to ascertain and review a great deal of information to better understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We kindly ask the public to refrain from speculation while the inquiry progresses.”
The spokesperson added: “We understand this news will cause great sadness, particularly within the local community, and we want to reassure everyone that we do not believe there is any broader risk to public safety at this time.”
