Two Ambulance Workers Arrested in Gross Negligence Manslaughter Case Following Six Deaths

Two paramedics employed by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter following the deaths of six adults in and around Wiltshire.

The investigation began in 2023 after an initial report was made to Wiltshire Police. Subsequently, a man in his 30s from West Wiltshire was arrested in June 2024 on six counts of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or willful neglect by a care worker. Later, in March 2025, a 59-year-old woman, also a SWASFT employee, was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Both individuals were suspended from their duties immediately after initial concerns surfaced—one is no longer employed by the Trust. They have since been released on conditional bail as police continue their enquiries.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service emphasised the Trust’s swift response: “Upon becoming aware of the concerns, we promptly launched an internal investigation and referred the matter to the police. Both members of staff were suspended and relieved of all patient care responsibilities. We assure the public this is an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to patients. Please continue to call 999 for emergencies.”

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team said: “This is a significant investigation into multiple adult deaths in the Wiltshire area. Since the initial 2023 report, extensive enquiries have been made to establish the facts. Our focus remains on supporting the families affected, and we ask the media to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Wiltshire Police have encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist with the investigation. Further comments will be withheld as the case progresses.
