Twelve Days of Christmas in Somerset: Festive Events to Lift Your Spirits

Christmas is traditionally a time for joy, community, and togetherness. But what if you’re not feeling very merry this year? Spending the festive season alone is more common than holiday films and ads suggest. A recent survey in Bath found nearly half of people expect to feel lonely at some point during the holidays, with over a third unsure where to turn for support.

The period after Christmas often brings a sense of emptiness or anti-climax, known as ‘Crimbo Limbo.’ After weeks or months of preparation, December 25 comes and goes quickly, leaving many people feeling down.

That’s why practicing self-care during this time is essential. Here at Somerset Live, we’ve mapped out a variety of local events and activities spanning the twelve days of Christmas to help lift your spirits and keep the festive cheer alive.

Not everyone has plans for Christmas lunch—some live far from family, have complex family situations, or don’t typically celebrate the holiday. To help, a free Christmas lunch is available at the Assembly Rooms in Frome. Doors open at 11 am, with a delicious two-course meal served from noon to 2 pm. Transport can also be arranged, including delivery of Christmas lunches for those unable to attend. Booking is available online.

Nature is a wonderful remedy for the soul. Take a peaceful walk along the Somerset Levels, climb the tor to enjoy breathtaking views, and remember to bring a bottle to fill with water from the red and white springs at the base of the hill.

When ‘Crimbo Limbo’ kicks in, battling feelings of despondency and emptiness can be difficult. Combat the post-Christmas blues with a visit to Wookey Hole Caves, featuring dazzling winter circus shows and sparkling cave displays. Tickets can be booked online.

For those back at work or school, winter fun continues. The ice rink at Clarks Village in Street is open until January 5, offering themed skating sessions from Taylor Swift to K-pop—perfect for breaking up the winter routine. Don’t forget to book your tickets in advance.

Feeling stuck or uninspired? Take a leisurely stroll through Beacon Hill Woods. Collect twigs and dried leaves to get creative with winter mobiles, leaf buntings, or festive wreaths.

As New Year approaches, it’s natural to reflect on the past year—whether with pride or regret. To focus on the future, join the calendar-making session at the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. It’s a great way to set intentions for 2026.

Mark the end of 2025 with a New Year’s Eve party at the Wookey Hole Inn, featuring live music by local band The Sheriff. It’s a joyful way to say farewell to the year.

Kick off the new year with a refreshing four-mile group walk through the town’s footpaths and fields, starting at the Market Cross at 11 am. Exercise is a great boost for both mind and body.

For some lighthearted fun, check out the Memorial Theatre’s Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime. Due to high demand, an additional show has been added.

History enthusiasts can explore the Bishop’s Palace and its impressive Great Hall, with exhibitions curated by local volunteer Stuart Moore. Admission is included with the general ticket.

January can feel long, making it a perfect time to focus on patience and mindfulness. Join a community yoga session at the Shepton Mallet Scout Hut at 10 am for 45 minutes of gentle, mindful exercise. No booking is needed—just bring your mat and enjoy.

On the twelfth and final day of Christmas, it’s time to pack away the decorations and embrace the month ahead. End the festive season with a guided tour of the high parts of Wells Cathedral—a serene and inspiring experience.

With these events and self-care ideas, your Christmas in Somerset can be full of connection, creativity, and calm.
