Police have released CCTV footage amid an ongoing investigation into a “truly horrendous” sexual assault that took place in Weston-super-Mare over the weekend.
The incident occurred around 9:20 pm on Saturday, December 6, in Byron Recreation Park, where an unknown man approached a 12-year-old girl. He reportedly touched her waist and kissed her before she managed to run away and immediately informed a group of women nearby.
The suspect is described as a tall, slim Black male in his early 20s with facial stubble, wearing black clothing.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry praised the girl’s bravery: “She showed enormous courage in the face of this truly horrendous sexual assault. She did absolutely the right thing by running away, telling responsible adults, and reporting the incident to police.”
He also thanked those who supported her immediately afterward. Officers met with the girl and her family the same evening to take a detailed statement. Specialist detectives are leading the investigation, ensuring her welfare and providing appropriate support throughout.
Avon and Somerset Police released footage of a man crossing Kenn Close, urging anyone who recognizes him to come forward. Chief Inspector Barry added: “There were likely many people in the area on Saturday night, and we encourage anyone with information to contact us. We are particularly interested in speaking with the driver of a vehicle seen passing the man, as any dashcam footage could help identify him.”
Though no other similar incidents have been reported locally, the police are increasing patrols in the area to reassure the community.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote reference number 5225342867.
