Triple Rain Warnings Issued as Somerset Prepares for Severe Weather

Somerset faces a challenging weather forecast with three consecutive rain warnings issued within 48 hours. The first warning comes into effect at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, and will last until midnight. Following this, two yellow rain warnings will cover different parts of the county on Thursday: the western side from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the eastern side from midnight until 9 p.m.

The Met Office has cautioned that heavy rainfall could lead to flooding of homes and businesses, as well as significant disruptions to transport networks. Recent wet conditions amplify the risk, with 15-25 mm of rain expected across most areas and isolated pockets potentially receiving between 40 and 60 mm, especially in highland regions like south Wales and Dartmoor.

Strong winds may also accompany the heavy rain, with gusts possibly exceeding 50 mph along some English Channel coasts, increasing the potential for damage and travel complications.

The second wave of rain is predicted to reach Bristol around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, then move swiftly into Gloucestershire. The initial weather warning, covering parts of North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset stretching to the Devon border, remains in force from midnight until 9 p.m. Wednesday. The second warning impacts West Somerset and areas near Exmoor National Park starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible flooding and stay updated on weather developments as Somerset weather conditions intensify.
