Tributes to Hero Firefighter Garry White, Who Dedicated 33 Years to Somerset

Tributes have poured in for Garry White, a beloved local firefighter who devoted over three decades to serving the Somerset community. Garry, a former watch manager at Wells Fire Station, passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and compassion.

Garry began his career in 1982 and faithfully served Wells and the surrounding areas until his retirement in 2015. Even after stepping down, he remained an active presence at the station, regularly stopping by to connect with colleagues and contributing significantly to the training of both past and present firefighters.

Wells Fire Station shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, expressing their sorrow: “It’s with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of former watch manager Garry White this week. Garry served Wells and the local community for an incredible 33 years, starting in 1982 and finally retiring in 2015. Even after retiring, he would regularly pop to the station for a chat with everyone and was instrumental in training Wells firefighters both past and present. He was an inspirational figure who will be sadly missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with Garry’s family at this difficult time.”

The tribute resonated deeply within the community, with many sharing fond memories of Garry. A local resident recalled, “Sad news. Served with him until 1990 then alongside attending jobs as a paramedic. A big-hearted, well-loved man.” Another firefighter from a neighboring station reflected, “God bless Garry. I joined Shepton the same year Garry joined Wells. We did our basic training together. We made Sub Officer of our respective Stations. I had a lot of respect for Garry. We would meet often at incidents, have a chat and a laugh. A lovely man.”

Co-workers remembered him as “a great and honest man to serve with” and “a privilege to work alongside.” His daughter paid a touching tribute: “My dad was always so proud to be in fire service. It was his life.”

Garry White’s commitment, kindness, and leadership left an enduring mark on those who knew him, and his memory continues to inspire the fire service community in Somerset.
