Tributes Pour in for ‘True Gentleman’ Craig Hurcombe Following Discovery of Human Remains

The rugby community and friends have been left heartbroken after human remains were discovered in the Roemead Road area of Gurney Slade on the night of January 14. The remains are believed to be those of 40-year-old Craig Hurcombe, a missing man from Wiltshire.

Craig was a passionate rugby player and a cherished member of Devizes Rugby Club. Known affectionately as ‘Hurcs’, he represented the club hundreds of times, captained multiple teams, and served as the club’s Vice President. His dedication to the sport and his club was evident both on and off the field.

Friends recall Craig as a genuine and kind-hearted individual. Dan Smith, a friend who worked with Craig several years ago, shared his shock and sadness upon hearing the news. “Craig was a good lad. He always made time for people and was willing to help anyone in need,” Dan said. “I’m devastated to hear this news. Rest in peace, mate.”

The rugby community extended consolations, with Swindon Rugby Football Club highlighting Craig’s legacy as a “true gentleman” whose passion and kindness left a lasting impact. They sent their heartfelt condolences to Craig’s family, friends, and all who knew him.

Adding to the tragic circumstances, Michael Bretton, 40, from Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with murder and a count of stalking related to a woman’s fear of violence. He is currently remanded in custody, awaiting a hearing at Bristol Crown Court.

Craig Hurcombe’s sudden passing has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him, but his spirit and legacy continue to inspire the rugby community he so dearly loved.
