Tributes Pour In for Somerset Maestro Ronald Corp OBE as Classical Music World Mourns

The classical music world is in mourning following the sudden death of Ronald Corp OBE, a distinguished composer and conductor born in Wells, Somerset, in 1951. Corp, who passed away unexpectedly on May 7 at the age of 74 in Bath, was a revered figure whose influence touched musicians and audiences worldwide.

As the founder and musical director of the New London Orchestra and the New London Children’s Choir, Corp’s legacy extends deeply into the musical community. He also served as musical director of the Highgate Choral Society in north London. Celebrated for his impeccable musicianship, Ron performed at prestigious events including the Queen’s Jubilee and was a frequent conductor at the BBC Proms throughout the 1990s, where he notably led Young People’s Concerts that he both presented and narrated.

In 2005-6, Corp was commissioned by Somerset Music to compose the full-scale cantata Waters of Time, inspired by Somerset’s rich folk traditions. This work was performed at Wells Cathedral and Colston Hall, testament to his enduring connection to his home county.

The news of his passing struck a chord across the classical music world, eliciting heartfelt tributes. The London Chorus expressed profound sorrow, honoring him as a dear friend and inspiring musical director whose 40-year association with the choir—including 30 years in leadership—left an indelible mark. They pledged to commemorate his legacy so his passion and example would endure.

Classic FM paid tribute on social media, thanking Corp for his contributions to music. The Three Choirs Festival also mourned his loss, recognizing his unwavering dedication to English choral music and his influential compositions, which have become mainstays in choral repertoires nationwide.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ronald Corp’s greatest gift was his ability to nurture a love of music in children and young people, particularly through his work with the New London Children’s Choir. His dedication ensured that his passion for music resonated across generations.

Ronald Corp OBE’s death leaves a profound void, but his enduring contributions to classical and choral music will continue to inspire and enrich for years to come.
