David Warburton, the former Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome, has died suddenly at the age of 59. Known as a passionate advocate and “defender of Somerset,” Warburton’s death was reported last week after he was found at a London property.
Warburton served as the MP for the Somerset constituency from 2015 until his resignation in June 2023 amid a parliamentary investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and admitted cocaine use. While he acknowledged using cocaine, he consistently denied the sexual misconduct claims. Frustrated by what he described as an unfair and prolonged 14-month inquiry, Warburton said he had “no choice” but to step down, triggering a by-election later won by Liberal Democrat Sarah Dyke.
Following the news of his passing, former Labour MP Simon Danczuk, who later joined Reform UK, expressed his condolences on social media. “Sad to see that David Warburton, former Conservative MP, has died. Cleared by parliament of any wrongdoing, but like most of us wasn’t flawless. He’d just had enough and resigned. With him a few times recently, he was doing really well. God bless him.”

Other parliamentary colleagues paid tribute. Marcus Fysh, former Tory MP for Yeovil, described Warburton as a “steadfast colleague and defender of Somerset and Britain” and praised his talent and sensitivity. Conservative MP for North Dorset, Simon Hoare, shared fond memories of working alongside Warburton, highlighting his kindness, sharp wit, and commitment to his constituents. “A family have lost a loved one and I pray for them and that David will Rest in Peace,” Hoare said.
Local figures also reflected on Warburton’s character and contributions. Somerset Green councillor Martin Dimery recalled meeting Warburton during the by-election period and spoke of his approachable nature and dedication to improving the music industry. Dimery, despite political differences, said he was shocked by Warburton’s sudden passing and extended condolences to the family.
Police confirmed that officers were called to an address at Chelsea Crescent, Sands End, west London on August 26. A man in his 50s was found dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police have classified the death as “unexpected but not suspicious.” The London Ambulance Service responded to the incident and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
David Warburton’s sudden death has prompted heartfelt tributes acknowledging his commitment to his constituency and the complexity of his public life. His family, friends, and colleagues continue to mourn one of Somerset’s most recognized political figures.
