Tributes Pour In After 13-Year-Old Dies Following Canal Jump in Exeter

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to 13-year-old Delvin Musakwa, who tragically died after jumping into a canal in Exeter. Emergency services were called to the scene near the swing bridge at around 4:35 pm on Monday after reports that Delvin had failed to resurface following the jump.

Rescuers quickly pulled Delvin from the water and provided treatment on site before rushing him to hospital in a serious condition. Despite medical efforts, he sadly passed away later in hospital, DevonLive confirmed.

Devon and Cornwall Police stated that Delvin’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and authorities are preparing a file for the coroner. Acting Superintendent Chris Conway addressed the tragedy, saying, “The family are being supported by specialist officers following this devastating incident. They have asked for privacy as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss.”

Delvin was a valued member of Heavitree Youth FC’s under-13s squad. Scott Bowker, the club secretary, shared heartfelt condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Delvin’s family, friends, and everyone who knew him. He was a wonderful, popular young man and a talented footballer. His passing has deeply shocked everyone at Heavitree Youth FC, and he will be greatly missed.”

One teammate described Delvin as a “star player” and an exceptional athlete. Delvin also attended school locally in Exeter.

At the time of the incident, Delvin was reportedly with friends. Several witnesses attempted to save him after he entered the water, but despite their efforts, the outcome was heartbreaking.

The canal area near the swing bridge, which links Clapperbrook Lane East to Riverside Valley Park, is a well-frequented spot for walkers, cyclists, paddleboarders, and canoeists. Safety signs on the bridge clearly prohibit swimming, and life buoys are available along the towpath.

This tragic event has left the community mourning the loss of a bright young life.
