Tributes Paid to ‘Perfect Gentleman’ Terry, Beloved Tearoom Owner and Councillor

Terry Towler, a treasured businessman and dedicated town councillor in Midsomer Norton, has died peacefully at the age of 90. Known affectionately as a ‘perfect gentleman,’ Terry ran the beloved tearoom Mrs Pickwick’s from 1977 until 1995 and devoted decades to serving his local community.

Originally from Bristol, Terry relocated to Midsomer Norton with his family in 1970. In 1977, he and his wife Pauline opened Mrs Pickwick’s—a charming tearoom and cake shop celebrated for its Dickensian atmosphere. The establishment attracted acclaim, even earning a spot in the esteemed ‘Just A Bite’ guide curated by food critic Egon Ronay. His son, Paul Towler, reminisced, “For Midsomer Norton, it was quite novel at the time!”

Beyond his business, Terry was committed to supporting Midsomer Norton. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce and played a key role in organising the ‘Norad ’80’ enterprise exhibition, an initiative to encourage new business growth in the area. His public service extended to roles on the Norton Radstock Town Council, and later, starting in 1995, on Timsbury Parish Council.

While at Timsbury Parish Council, Terry chaired the Village Millennium Committee, overseeing the publication of ‘The Timsbury Book’ and the installation of boundary stones marking the new Millennium—community landmarks that endure today.

Paul Towler fondly remembers his father as an exemplar of kindness and positivity: “He never said a bad word about anyone and always saw the good in people. Everyone said he was the perfect gentleman and a very good role model.” Known for his warmth and approachable nature, Terry was a fixture on the High Street, always eager to catch up with locals.

Terry Towler passed away on Wednesday, February 11, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, community spirit, and entrepreneurship. A memorial service will be held at Haycombe Cemetery in Bath on Wednesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations will be collected for the Macular Society.
